Oral Sedation Dentistry
Oral Sedation Dentist in North Alabama
What is oral sedation dentistry?
Studies show that 30% of the population avoids the dentist due to fear. To alleviate this fear, most patients require anti-anxiety medication about 15 minutes before the treatment begins. Oral sedation dentistry provides a safe, relaxing, and comfortable experience for patients to get the care they need and want. There are several ways that sedation may be administered.
- IV Sedation—administered into the bloodstream
- Inhalation Conscious Sedation—uses nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) or oxygen sedation
- Enteral Conscious Sedation—also known as orally administered sedation or sedation dentistry
- Sedative Medication—the dentist determines which medication is best suited for the patient
What are the benefits of oral sedation dentistry?
Patients will no longer be fearful in the dental chair, and are relaxed and comfortable. And, because oral sedation produces a retrograde amnesiac effect, patients seldom remember much about their visit. Those who cannot tolerate longer procedures will be able to have more dentistry completed with fewer visits. Also patients with a gag reflex, back or neck problems, or jaw soreness can comfortably sit in the chair for lengthy procedures. If you have had difficulty in the past getting numb, you will find it is much easier during oral sedation dental appointments.
How safe is oral sedation dentistry?
There has never been a documented report of a serious adverse incident due to the use of oral sedation in adults. The Dentist’s Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) reports more than one million successful sedation procedures have been completed in the US over the past six years. As a DOCS member, Dr. Sandlin follows a protocol that calls for monitoring each patient’s vital signs using a pulse oximeter and blood pressure monitor providing a safe environment for every sedation appointment.
