Laser Dentistry refers to dental procedures where lasers of varying types are used to improve and enhance treatment outcomes. Dental lasers are used for a variety of treatments, and depending on each patient’s needs different lasers will be used.
Dental lasers are used in oral surgery, gum disease treatment, decay removal, restoration of teeth with bonded fillings and crowns, and teeth whitening.
Every patient has different treatment needs, and the length of time a laser is used varies from just a few brief moments to several minutes. The benefits of using lasers in dentistry are numerous. First, there is a reduction in the amount of local anesthesia required to perform the procedure. Often patients may experience “needle-free” fillings where the only anesthesia is provided by the laser. In the case of surgical procedures bleeding and swelling are minimized, and there is a reduction in postoperative discomfort. Laser treatment of gum tissue can eliminate the need for additional visits since healing is greatly accelerated allowing simultaneous restoration of teeth in the same area. Also, laser energy improves the effect of tooth whitening agents, shortens appointment time, and improves results over home whitening.
